 As signaled by Manuel Metz on the matplotlib-devel list, transition to
 py3k will likely break the `old` behaviour due to a conflict between the
 range keyword, and the xrange function being converted to range. Any py3k
 compatible Numpy version should hence have the old behaviour either
 completely removed or fixed.
